It's also equally important to wear sunscreen year round and indoors too. Some indoor light sources emit small infrared and UV radiation (time to switch off that desk lamp or sit further away), while the sunlight filtering through windows can also be intensified by glass. Over time, this exposure can damage skin and lead to the development of brown spots and fine lines.
So how do you deal with this onslaught of ultraviolet and infrared rays?
Dear Maven, with a good sun protection skin care routine!
In addition to wearing sunscreen year round, it's also important to keep skin hydrated and in tip top condition to further improve the effectiveness of sunscreen. This is important, as the skin also has natural defense and repair mechanisms that counteract the effects of sun and environmental exposure. If either is not working properly, you're skin is likely to suffer.

As the temperature drops, so does time spent outdoors. Despite this, it's still important to wear sunscreen in the cooler months. This routine is ideal for running errands. At bare minimum, SPF 15 is ok but SPF 30 is better. If you're spending time on the slopes, refer to the Hanging out in the sun routine below. Considering the Sun Bum sunscreens are sheer and extremely hydrating, it's enough to address normal - combination skin needs. Layer over a moisturizer or a serum if you prefer. For makeup, apply a finishing face powder containing SPF. IMM's personal favorites include Nars All Day Luminous Foundation Powder Broad Spectrum SPF 24, and Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Powder with SPF 15. Some concealers also contain SPF, such as MAC's Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35.
To add a bit of color, you can tint the sunscreen with concealer or foundation, or mix foundation (1:1) and SPF together.
Synonymous with warmer weather is skin exposure and more time spent soaking up rays. Add a serum containing antioxidants for extra protection against the elements. Studies have shown antioxidants applied to skin and used in conjunction with a sunscreen can enhance protection. Add a lightweight moisturizer SPF to keep skin hydrated (optional). Spending more time outdoors can cause skin to dry out more and affect sunscreen effectiveness. The Body Shop's Vitamin C Sunscreen Moisturizer is great as it has vitamin C, an effective antioxidant. Top it all off with a sunscreen containing at least SPF 30, and re-apply throughout the day 20 minutes before heading outside.
For this regimen, ideally you don't want to wear too much on your skin as the heat and elements or physical activity can cause makeup and product to 'melt' off. As you're exposing your skin to the elements for a prolonged period, it's ideal to keep it hydrated and top with a very high protection SPF. Hada Labo SPF 30 moisturizer is ideal for this situation as the hyaluronic acid in the product draws and retains water in the skin. A high protection sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 50 is recommended, but don't forget to re-apply regularly.
