Chanel Les Beiges luminous sheer powders ($57.50 USD) were launched in 2013. Since their arrival stateside, I've been obsessed with this lightweight sheer powder that leaves skin looking dewy and luminous rather than chalky and dry. Les Beiges is one of the few repeat products I purchase and rely on for a finished but dewy skin look.
The 7-shade Les Beiges powder collection claims to be an innovative and versatile powder make up that enhances, brightens or bronzes the complexion for a custom glow. Worn alone it enhances skin’s natural beauty; over foundation, provides a sheer, luminous finish. From a technology standpoint, it claims to protect against skin-dulling environmental stressors, while White Rose and Cotton Flower offer absolute comfort for even the most sensitive complexions.
After using the powder for a year and a half, I can assure you that it has lived up to its claims. Not to mention, I’ve barely made it half-way through my compact! I own the No 20 and No 30 shades. The former, I use as an everyday finishing or setting powder over my tinted moisturizer/SPF/BB cream/foundation and the darker shade, I use as a contour or bronzer. As a finishing powder, I love how it doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight or exaggerate surface imperfections. The lightweight and sheer texture is also a big winner as it helps the product meld seamlessly with the skin when buffed with a kabuki or face powder brush, either over makeup or alone. I find the best finish I get with this product is when I layer it over a tinted moisturizer/SPF or bb cream. It’s ok over a foundation, but as a general rule, I don’t like wearing foundation and powder together as it can look a little too ‘done’. Another thing worth mentioning about this powder is that it doesn’t leave an ashy or ‘whitish’ cast on skin when photographed.
In terms of wear, Les Beiges is the first face powder I have not had a problem with drying out my combination sensitive skin and one that I have been able to wear year round. However, if you are seeking a mattifying, full coverage or blotting feature from your face powder, this product is not for you. For Chanel makeup fans, I liken this product to be the powdered version of the now discontinued Hydramax tinted moisturizer. Compared to the other face powders in the Chanel range, Les Beiges is lighter in texture, coverage and wear than the Double Perfection Lumiere and Poudre Universelle Compacte powders. In addition, Les Beiges is more suited if your skin tends towards the dry side. Based on online reviews on Makeup Alley, oily skinned beauties have found this to exacerbate their shine after a few hours of wear. The only thing I don’t like about this product is the accompanying brush. The half-moon shape is ok for lightly re-touching throughout the day, but to achieve the looks that are specified in the online product tutorial, you really need a kabuki or face powder brush, as it’s the buffing action that gets you the seamless and luminous skin finish. I think Chanel would have been better off following Dior Nude Skin Powder’s lead and providing a kabuki brush with the product. I love this product as it is lightweight, provides a luminous and dewy finish to skin and is comfortable to wear all day. The SPF 15 is an additional bonus. Akin to a powdered version of the discontinued Chanel Hydramax tinted moisturizer, Chanel Les Beiges is lightweight, provides a luminous and dewy finish to skin and is comfortable to wear all day. The SPF 15 is an additional bonus! |
