There are very few career and business books I've come across that are hard to put down. When it comes to books, I crave the thrill and action that a Tom Clancy novel arouses or the drama and emotional roller coaster a Nicholas Sparks love story evokes. Similarly, for a business and career book, I crave practicality and how readily the ideas presented can be executed. After all, without the pizzazz, the topics can be dry. |
Aliza Licht, global fashion communications exec and brains behind Twitter phenom @DKNY PR GIRL, shares her story of how she made her dream job a reality. With a backdrop of high fashion, Licht dishes on invaluable career transition and development advice so that you can avoid common missteps and behave professionally. Not your typical career or business book, the peek into the world of fashion and what goes on behind the hiring and business scene is a true eye opener.
Leave Your Mark really struck a chord with me as Licht's transition from medicine into communications closely reflected my career transition from a PhD in neuropathology into PR then into beauty. The reality is that it's not easy, and Licht accurately and realistically captures the challenges and lays out her strategy and lessons learned along the way. The best piece of advice she shares that extends beyond landing a job also pertains to continual development as a whole.
"Max out every opportunity to learn."
Written in a non-judgemental and matter of fact way. What I commend most is Licht's determination to carve her path and not adopt a 'woe is me' tone but a 'can do' attitude with a solid strategy that anyone is capable of executing. Not only are her shared experiences great anecdotes but also great at illustrating in real time and context what's appropriate and professional. Sometimes reading a professional development article doesn't have the same impact as it can be hard to relate to the situation presented.
Aliza Licht's Leave Your Mark is also written in a resonating generational relevant voice. It's easy to read, realistic and approach is not one 'with stars in your eyes.' Instead, it's intelligent and serves as a great career resource with actionable insights - especially chapter eight - Surviving People and Politics.
Leave Your Mark is one of the few gems I've eagerly devoured, dog earred and referenced. It's also one of the three books (the other two are Girlboss and What Color Is Your Parachute) I highly recommend to my mentees and junior associates who ask me for career transition guidance or seeking an unconventional medical science track career.
The advice in the book is practical, common sense, and relevant to any field and career level. I think that sometimes we forget the basics despite our career journey.
